Hello,

Thank you to the Room Moms and parents who made our Valentine's Day party a success! Thank you, too, to those families who contributed to our dwindling supply of Kleenex/tissues. We have been using a few boxes every week!

Our Lenten journey has begun. We went to Mass on Ash Wednesday and received ashes. We are learning about ways that we can be more mindful of Jesus/God and each other during the 40 days preceding Easter. Making Lenten crosses, praying, and thinking of ways to serve others are some activities that our 1A community can do to help ourselves grow closer to God.

We will continue learning about our Growing in Love program during Religion this week, as well as talking about Lent.

We are in the middle of our Friendzy book and had a great discussion on what we do to calm ourselves down if we are mad or frustrated in the classroom. Please talk to your student about healthy ways to stay calm after becoming mad. Some examples included taking a deep breath, counting backward from ten, reading a book, or drawing something. Coping skills are an important part of growth during the student's formative years.

During Reading and Spelling, the students will be introduced to the contractions with am, is, are, and will such as I'm, she's, and he'll. Please see this week's Spelling words below.

In Language Arts, the students will be using story evidence to answer written questions about a text.

In Math, the students will be taking their Topic 9 Test on Comparing Numbers. Then, the students will begin Topic 10, Using Models and Strategies to Add Tens and Ones. Please have the students study their Math fact sheets. Their quiz for the Math facts is every Friday.

During Social Studies, the students will be reviewing How Do Families Take Care of Each Other and will have their test on Thursday.

In Science, we will continue learning about the sun and how it can help you if you get lost.

Hello,

This week we will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Tuesday complete with a party in the afternoon. Thank you in advance to our Room Moms and helpers for planning and assisting with the celebration. If you would like to have your student bring in Valentine's cards for the class, please make sure that they have one for each of our 25 students. On Wednesday, February 14, we will be going to church to receive ashes as it is the first day of our Lenten season.

Please continue to encourage your student to study their Math facts and complete two iReady Math and two iReady Reading personalized lessons per week. The memorization of Math facts, while a struggle at first, will help your student immeasurably when it comes to multi-step problems in second grade and beyond.

Please check your student's PowerSchool grades. The different categories viewed can help you see where your student is excelling and where your student needs help/assistance in studying/learning.

Here is a look at our upcoming week:

In Religion, we will continue learning about our Growing in Love unit and also learn about Lent. We will be making Lenten crosses to display in our school windows for the remainder of the Lenten season.

In Reading and Spelling, the students will review that -ay endings to words sound like the long vowel a, as in say and play. They will also learn the rule that they must change the -y to an i before adding an -er or an -est in two-syllable short vowel words, as in happier and happiest, and will spell last week's Memory words. Please find the Spelling words below.

In Language Arts, the students will finish writing and illustrating their How-to texts.

In Math, we will continue comparing two-digit numbers and will use the greater than, less than, and equal to signs.

In Science, we will continue our studies of sun and shadows. The students enjoyed going outside to draw their shadows on Friday morning and noticed how their shadows changed after lunch because of the sun's apparent change in location in the sky.

During Social Studies, we will continue learning about how our families care for one another. We have discussed the meaning of chores (jobs done daily/weekly) and bonds (time spent together) within the family.

Tuesday, January 9th, begins our 3rd Quarter. Many of the students need some extra school supplies such as pencils, erasers, crayons, and/or markers. If you sent your student with a second box of crayons at the beginning of the year, I will give them those this week. Please ask your students if they remember having the aforementioned school supplies. If they do not remember, they probably will benefit from some new items. :)

Your student will receive their iPad on Tuesday and will need to complete two iReady Math and two iReady Reading personalized lessons by Saturday midnight. Our second iReady diagnostic test will be at the end of the month.

Here is what your student will be learning during their first week back:

In Religion, we will continue our studies of the Virgin Mother, Mary. The students have been reciting the Hail Mary and will need to recite it by heart by Wednesday of next week. Here is a link that we had been using in December to help them memorize the prayer:

During Reading and Spelling, the students will be introduced to CVVC words with the long a and long o sounds such as mail and boat. The students will learn that the first vowel states its letter name and the second vowel is silent. They will also be introduced to additional memory words. A copy of those memory words will be sent home this week. Please make sure your student is familiar with these words and can read them easily when seen. The patterned Spelling words can be found below.

In Language Arts, the students will be working on Opinion pieces.

During Math, we will be continuing our Topic 7 Unit by counting to 120 by 1's and 10's on open number lines and number charts.

Please note that we will begin recording grades for their weekly Friday Math fact quizzes in January. Studies have proven that students who know their Math facts have more capacity and less frustration when working on multi-step Math problems in future grades. Please have your student study their Math fact sheets daily. We will make sure that each student has an updated Math fact sheet on Tuesday.

In Social Studies, the students will be learning about what families need and want. We will be completing a poster of various examples of goods, markets, prices, needs, and shelters as students make connections to these vocabulary words and content.

During Science, students will be listening to a read-aloud about a plant experiment. Then, we will be designing our own plant experiment.

Here are this week's Spelling words:

mail
nail
tail

rain
train

boat

Newsletter for the Week of December 18, 2023

Hello! This is the last newsletter of the second quarter. Time seems to be flying by! We should be having fun this shortened week. On Monday, the 1A students will be out of uniform wearing Christmasy colors. Candy Cane Corner will be happening on Tuesday. If you haven't sent in money for your student yet, please do so if you want them to buy any family members or friends gifts on the 19th in Valker Hall. We will also be seeing our Buddies on Wednesday and will sit with them at Mass.

We will continue our studies of the Infancy Narrative focusing on the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, during Religion. We have been learning the Hail Mary in class. Here is the link that you can play to have your student practice the prayer. The students will be expected to know the prayer the second week we get back from break in January. https://www.google.com/search?q=hail+mary+prayer+by+tomkin&rlz=1C1GCEV_enUS966US966&oq=hail+mary+prayer+by+tomkin&aqs=chrome..69i57j33i160l3.7550j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&safe=active&ssui=on

During Reading, Spelling, and Language Arts, we will be reviewing what we have learned thus far with various activities and games. We will not have a Spelling test this week.

In Math, we will begin our Topic 7 unit by counting to 120 by tens and ones. The students will not be receiving their iPads over break. We will resume handing out the iPads on Tuesday afternoon, January 9th. Please have your students review their Math facts if you have time over break. We will begin recording grades for their weekly Math fact quizzes in January.

In Science, we will complete an activity by making umbrellas that are less likely to blow over in the wind.

We will not be starting a new lesson in Social Studies until we come back from our Christmas break.

If you have any questions please email me at [email protected].

Have a blessed and wonderful Christmas with your family,

Newsletter for the Week of December 11, 2023

Hello! This is the last full week Newsletter of the second quarter! This week we have our Christmas Concert on Thursday evening. Please have your student in the Church by 6:30 pm for the 7:00 performance. They have been working hard in Music class. I am looking forward to hearing their songs!

The students voted for an Advent service project during Religion class. The majority wanted to bring a new unwrapped toy for a person to help benefit our sister parish, Mother of the Americas. This project is being spearheaded by our SFS Student Council. I asked the students to use at least $1.00 of their own money to purchase this gift to show that they are truly helping to serve others. Other suggestions were to bring in a hat or mittens for the mitten tree and bring in canned goods for the food pantry.

Here is what we will be learning academically during the week:

In Religion, we will be learning about the birth of our Savior Jesus by reading Chapter 9 in our Blest Are We book and listening to various stories about Jesus' birth.

In Reading and Spelling, we will be learning about CVCe words with the -ing and -ed endings such as baking, and smiled. We need to remember to drop the e before adding the ending -ing or -ed to keep the CVCe vowel sounding long like its letter name. The students will also be spelling the Memory Words that were introduced last week. Please see the Spelling words below. This is the last Spelling list of the quarter.

During Language Arts, the students will complete their thank-you notes and write a friendly letter. The students will be asking you for the address of a person of choice for whom they wrote the letter.

During Math, we will continue learning to interpret data. We will have our Math test on Thursday or Friday. Please continue having your student practice their given Math facts. The more they do, the better they will be at becoming fluent. They will be quizzed on them this Friday.

During Social Studies, we will finish learning about different jobs that people have. They will have their test on Thursday.

In Science, the students will be completing an activity that will demonstrate how a tree can stay standing during a windy day by using different types of paper umbrellas.

Newsletter for the Week of December 4, 2023

Hello! Thank you for helping your student practice their part in our Mass and/or for coming to Mass to support your student yesterday. The students performed their jobs well; it was a beautiful celebration.

This week should be entertaining! We have our field trip to the play, Mrs. Claus, A Holiday Musical! Please pack your student a brown bag lunch and two snacks. We will eat a snack before we go to the play and one on the bus after the play. A drawstring backpack would be appropriate to hold their snacks on the trip. Our lunch will be eaten in our classroom once we have returned.

Here is what we will be learning this week:

During Religion, we will continue to learn about Advent and celebrate St. Nicholas Day on the 6th. The Mass for this week will be on Friday (not Wednesday), as it is a Holy Day of Obligation.

In Reading and Spelling, the students will be introduced to plural CVC and CVCe words. They will also learn that we need to add an -es to words that end in x, ch, sh, and ss. Please find the Spelling words below.

In Math, we will start our new unit on Collecting, Representing, Organizing, and Interpreting Data. PLEASE NOTE: your student must know their Math facts. They have received a Math fact list every Monday since the second week or so of school. I have not entered those grades in the grade book thus far but will begin the week we come back from our Christmas break. Please review these Math facts with them daily. Thank you to those who have been doing so. The students tend to do better on their weekly, Friday-timed tests if they study those facts that are on their list rather than through a jumble of various Math facts.

In Social Studies, we will continue our Economics Unit on the types of jobs that are available in school.

In Science, we will continue our studies on plants.

Hello!

I hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving holiday and a great time with the family this past week.

We will be starting off this busy week by practicing for our Mass which is on December 1st, Friday, at 8:30 am. Please join us as your student will be hosting as a greeter, reader, or gift bearer. If your student has a reading part, please continue to have them practice it, so that they are comfortable, confident, and fluent with the words.

During Religion, we will continue our studies of Advent by reading from our Blest Our We book, presenting an Advent overview at Mass, and working on an Advent project in class.

In Reading and Spelling, we will be learning this CVCe words' rule: when there is a CVCe word, the first vowel is long (says its letter name) and the e is silent, such as ride and game. We will also review and spell the Memory Words which were introduced two weeks ago. Please see this week's Spelling Words below.

In Language Arts, we will be completing an informative paragraph.

Newsletter for the Week of November 13, 2023

Hello,

This is the last full week before Thanksgiving vacation. Please make sure that you are reviewing Spelling Words, Memory words when given, and the Math facts that are on the individual slips of paper in their red Take Home folder nightly. The more your student reviews these words and facts, the better they will be in Reading and on their tests on Friday.

Here is what we will be learning this week:

In Religion, your student will have their Chapter 5 Test on Tuesday. Please make sure that you are reviewing the Chapter 5 packet's highlighted information and review page with your student. We will also be reviewing our Mass parts that will be handed out this week for our December 1st 1A Mass. I will send home your student's part for the Mass in their red Take Home folder. If your student has a speaking/reading part, please practice this with them so that they are confident that they can read it fluently.

During Reading and Spelling, the students will be reintroduced to long vowel CV words such as we and go. Please find the Spelling words below.

During Language Arts, the students will be doing informative writing.

In Math, the students will begin a new topic, Topic 5, and will be adding and subtracting equations with unknown numbers, identifying and solving true and false equations, and adding three numbers. Thank you for helping your student work through the math problems on their homework sheets. Overall, we are doing well in understanding how numbers within the part part whole chart are related.

During Social Studies, we will be finishing our Civics unit.

In Science, we will continue our studies of plants and use our new microscopes and slides to pique our curiosity about nature.

Newsletter for the Week of November 6, 2023

Hello!

We have quite a few bus changes this week. No bussing is available on Monday. There isn't bussing in the afternoon on Thursday. Friday is an early dismissal, at noon.

Here is what your student will be learning this week:

In Reading and Spelling, we will continue to read and spell CVC words with the -ed and -ing endings such as flipping and stepped. I have been reviewing the rule that when the students see a short vowel base word (such as flip), the word must have two consonants after the vowel before putting on an -ing or -ed ending. Many of the students can cite this rule, however, it would be helpful if you could ask them to tell you the rule to reinforce their learning. In contrast, a short vowel base word, such as jump, does not need an added consonant as it already has two consonants after the vowel. We will also be reading and spelling the Memory words that were introduced last week. Please find the Spelling words below.

In Writing, the students will be writing a descriptive paragraph about the monsters that they created out of scraps of cloth and yarn. Then, we will begin identifying the main idea of a story and the details that support that main idea.

In Religion, we will continue learning about God, our loving Father. Please be on the lookout for the Chapter 5 packet to come home on Wednesday. Our test will be on Friday of this week.

In Math, we will finish with our unit on Subtraction up to 20 and will have our Topic 4 test on Thursday.

During Social Studies, we will be learning about and stating the different types of groups that we belong to.

In Science, we will continue our studies of plants and how seedlings can be observed and identified with their adult plants. We also received some exciting gifts from the money that was raised through the fundraisers. We will be able to use microscopes that will deepen our knowledge about the nature that surrounds us! Thank you!!

Newsletter for the Week of October 30, 2023

Hello,

We have many different activities planned for this week. On Monday, per Student Council, we may be out of uniform if we wear pink in support of Cancer Awareness. On Tuesday, we have our Halloween party. The students may wear costumes but no masks. On Wednesday, we will celebrate All Saints Day at mass. On Friday we will have Adoration in Church. Permission slips for the field trip to the Apollo Theater are due on Friday as well as picture retakes. Students who are having their pictures retaken may be out of uniform.

Here is what we will be learning this week academically:

In Religion, we will be learning about All Saints Day.

In Reading and Spelling, the students will be learning the CVC rule when adding an ending such as -ing or -ed to the base word. If there is a short vowel sound, you need to double the consonants following the vowel before adding the -ing or -ed ending in words such as hug, hugging, and grin, grinned. The CVCC words such as help and ask already have two consonants following the short vowel sound so we do not need to double the consonant. Please see the Spelling words below.

In Language Arts, we will be writing descriptive paragraphs using adjectives.

In Math, we will continue to learn about subtraction and will be studying our fact families.

In Social Studies, we will continue to understand why it is important to follow the Golden Rule in school.

In Science, we will begin our unit on plants.

Hello,

This week should be fun-filled for our students. On Thursday we will be going to the zoo. Please make sure that they pack a brown bag lunch and have a drawstring bag or light backpack to put it in. We will be carrying our lunch and water bottles with us when we are at the zoo. Also, please have your student dress for the weather. A poncho or rain jacket with a hood might be necessary for that day. On Friday, the students may come out of uniform if they dress as one of the Superkids (they voted for this theme for receiving 15 poms for good behavior).

Please remember to let me know if your student wants to participate in the Speech Contest. Their speech selection is due on Monday.

Here is what we will be learning this week:

In Religion, we will continue our studies of praising God. Watch out for the Chapter 4 review packet coming home. Have them study the underlined/highlighted information and their review page. The test is scheduled for Friday.

In Reading and Spelling, the students will be introduced to the -ed ending sounding like (t) as in jumped and -ed ending sounding like (d) as in smelled. Please find the Spelling words below.

Then, we will begin our Topic 4 Subtraction unit. They also will have a Math minute review quiz on Friday. Please make sure that you study the Math facts with your student daily.

Two iReady Reading and two iReady Math personalized lessons should be completed weekly. Please encourage your students to complete the minimum number of lessons and go on to more lessons if time allows. I am noticing great progress overall in the Reading and Math scores.

In Language Arts, your student will be writing an illustrated book about a story that happened to them.

During Social Studies, we will be learning about the Golden Rule, respect, and responsibility.

In Science, we will be creating leaf drawings. The trees are so beautiful this time of year!

Hello,

This week our schedule will be a bit different.
On Monday and Tuesday, we will have our iReady Math Diagnostic testing. Please make sure that your student is well-rested, has a good breakfast, and is ready to do their best. Let them know that some of the questions will be easy and that some may be hard. The test is designed that way. They just need to do their best.

Here is what your student will be learning this week:

In Religion, your student will have their first Religion Chapter 1 test about Jesus and our Catholic community on Thursday. Please look for the Chapter 1 packet that will be sent home on Tuesday, and study the highlighted information and the Review Page. We will also have Mass and Adoration on Friday

During Reading, the students will be reviewing their CVC words and will begin working on their Spelling words. The Spelling words can be found below. The test will be on Friday. Please review these words nightly. A Backpack page titled "At the Bus" will be sent home. Please have your student read it to you tonight and every night this week. It will help with their fluency skills. You can keep it at home. Subsequent Backpack pages will be sent home Tuesday through Thursday. The cut-out Spelling words can be written and kept at home as a review. The other Spelling Backpack pages should be returned for a grade. Any Memory word card cut-outs should be reviewed until your student knows them without hesitation. Memory word cards can be kept at home.

In Language Arts/Writing, the students will be writing lists and sentences complete with an uppercase letter for the beginning of the sentence, lowercase letters for the remaining words, and a punctuation mark at the end.

In Math, the students will continue working on addition problems and then we will switch to subtraction problems. A homework sheet will be sent home nightly. Please have your student complete each page and turn it in the following day. Please be on the lookout for the additional Math vocabulary flashcards. Ada, Lily, Sebastian, and Andres have been selected to bring in three items that have meaning to them and that will fit into a brown (white) bag. They will be able to share their treasures and tell the class why it is important to them.

Hello,

Spirit Week is this week! We will be out of uniform showing our School Spirit: Monday is Tropical Day; Tuesday is Movie Character Day; Wednesday is Sports Day; Thursday is Tie Dye Day; and Friday is Spirit Shirt Spirit Day! Please make sure your student wears or brings their gym shoes on Tuesday and Thursday as we will still have P.E. Comfortable clothes and shoes should be worn on Friday as there will be lots of fun activities planned after the walk.

Here is what the students will be learning this week:

During Religion, we will begin our studies in Chapter 3, God's Word Teaches Us. The students will learn that the Bible is God's Word. We will listen to Bible stories and hear how receiving God's love can change peoples' lives for the better. Our All About Me Bag presentations will occur on Thursday instead of Friday this week. Our presenters will be Jack, Victoria, Marianna, and Mateo. The students are really enjoying listening and learning about each other!

In Reading and Spelling, the students will be introduced to the digraph th as in thank and math. The Spelling words can be found below.

We will be learning how to ask research questions during LA class and will find facts in non-fiction texts and write about them.

During Math, we will be adding in any order and using addition to subtract. By using our Part-Part Whole Chart, the students will see how the numbers in the fact families are related.

During Science, the students will complete camouflage activities. It was exciting for me to hear that some of the students noticed how some animals were camouflaged in different books that they were reading. I love the video/text-to-text connections that they are making!

In Social Studies, the students will continue learning about how to get along with each other by working on their listening skills and realizing that even though we are similar in some ways, we are different in others. Those differences can help us learn from one another.

Newsletter for the week of September 18, 2023

Hello,

This upcoming week will be short as Thursday is an Early Dismissal day and on Friday the students do not have school. Parent Teacher Conferences are on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. Please sign up if you haven't already. I look forward to meeting with you and sharing your student's iReady diagnostic scores and work with you.

Mrs. Helgeson and I discussed how we can better communicate with you with respect to understanding which papers to complete as homework and which should be practiced or kept. Mrs. Helgeson or I will stamp the papers to be completed with a homework stamp, and will stamp other papers "Practice" if that is what is to be done. If your child needs to fix something to clarify his/her understanding, that will be marked "please fix" in green. All papers that have been graded that do not need to be signed can be kept. Math fact papers should be studied nightly along with spelling words.

Here is what your student will be learning this week:

In Reading the students will be introduced to wh words, such as where and when.

In Spelling, the students will be expected to write the wh question words and some -sh words. The Spelling Test is on Thursday this week, as we have a shortened week. Please find the spelling words below.

In LA/Writing, the students will be introduced to informative writing by writing and asking questions using the wh words.

In Religion, the students will have their Chapter 2 Religion test regarding the parish and items that can be found in a Catholic Church. Please study the Chapter 2 highlighted information and Review pages that were sent home on Thursday. We are also continuing our social-emotional learning program called Friendzy.

The students, as a whole, are picking up the concept of fact families by using their part-part whole chart. We will continue our addition and subtraction understanding by looking at doubles, near doubles, facts within a ten frame, and adding in any order during our Math class.

In Social Studies, we will continue learning about why it is important to learn from each other. Many of our students have been given opportunities to help one another when they have completed a task and want to assist another student in their understanding of a concept/problem.

During Science, we will continue our studies of the importance of camouflage.

Newsletter for the Week of September 11, 2023

Hello,

This upcoming week will be filled with different kinds of activities. On Tuesday, we have Picture Day! The students can come out of uniform but must adhere to the non-uniform guidelines that were sent in the school's newsletter. Also on Tuesday, the students and families are encouraged to go to Culver's as a fundraising event. I will be serving from 5-5:30 p.m. and would love to see you there. The next four students presenting their items from their All About Me white bags are Daisy, Noeano, Benzie, and Karol. Pajama and Stuffy Day is on Friday! The students can come dressed in pajamas or comfy clothes and bring their stuffed animals. The iReady diagnostic tests are complete, so we will start our Reading and Math chats with the students this week. We will choose what skills the students want to improve on during the rest of this calendar year. Conference sign-up times have been posted, but if you would like an earlier conference, please let me know.

Academically speaking, here is what your student will be learning this week:

In Religion, we will continue our studies about Mass and begin the Growing in Love curriculum (keeping your child safe).

In Reading, the students will be introduced to the sh digraph, as in fish and shell. The Spelling words will contain the sh words and some Memory Words that they were introduced to. Please see the list below.

In Language Arts/Writing, the students will be writing a personal narrative about a place that they visited.

In Math, we will have our addition and subtraction test and then will begin our fluency chapter on adding and subtracting to ten.

In Social Studies, the students will be learning why it is important to learn from each other.

In Science, we will learn about camouflage and survival by figuring out why polar bears are white.

Here are the Spelling words:
