Weekly Newsletter

Hello and welcome to 2nd grade!

This page is where you will find information about what your kiddos will be learning.  I will post weekly newsletters with specifics about each of our subject areas.  Look for an email over the weekend (usually on Sunday) from me about the week to come.  This page will be linked in the email.

As always, if you have any questions please let me know!

Here is what we will be up to this week:

Superkids: The students will be introduced to the new Superkids materials and routines.  Each morning we will decode, practice memory and spelling words, learn new phonics skills and read a story.  This week we will begin with short and long vowel sounds. In writing, the students will review the two parts of a sentence - naming and telling.  They will also learn how to put ideas together using the word "and".

Math: We will review first grade strategies and skills to ensure the students have them fresh in their minds while beginning our 2nd grade material.  We will begin by practicing ways to fluently add and subtract within 20.  We will practice doubles, ways to make 10, addition fact patterns, counting on and back, and using addition to subtract.

Science and Social Studies: The 2nd graders will be introduced to each subject.  In Science we will learn about classifying animals and in Social Studies we will learn about communities.

Religion: We are learning that Church welcomes us.  Just as in Social Studies, we will focus on the topic of community which allows for a wonderful overlap!

Have a fantastic weekend and I'll see everyone on Monday!

August 21st - 25th

Superkids: This week in Superkids we will begin Week 2 of our Warm-Up Unit and the students will receive their first spelling list!  We WILL have a quiz on Friday.  The words will be sent home Monday night to practice throughout the week and the quiz will be on Friday.  We will also practice/review three different types of writing: Narrative, Informative and Opinion.

Math: The students have been working hard in math using manipulatives and strategies to solve math problems.  This week we will work on addition fact patterns, counting on and back to subtract, and making a 10 to subtract.  At the end of the lessons we will review all that we have worked on.

Science: We have begun classifying animals.  The students are looking at the characteristics that scientists use to group animals.  We will be grouping animals by number of legs, bones or no bones, mammals, etc.

Social Studies: The students will continue to learn about community.  We are learning about places in our community where people live, work, play, and solve problems.  The students will eventually be creating their own community using the criteria that we have learned.

Religion: In Religion we have been working on class "bonding" activities, such as: getting to know you games and whole body listening.  We read, "The Crayon Box that Talked" and talked about how it's okay to be different and how we embrace each others differences.

Superkids: This week we officially begin Unit 1 of 2nd grade Superkids. The students will get a new workbook and will bring home the warm-up workbook.  We have another spelling quiz this Friday.  The words are: me, my, she, her, he, is, we, our, they, their, you, your.  We will also practice letter writing this week.

Math: We are wrapping up Unit 1.  We will review the strategies we have learned throughout the unit and prepare for a quiz. The quiz will be on Friday.

Science: The students began Lesson 2 of our Animals unit.  They learned about animal habits and environments and had to gather information to decide why an animal would come down from the hills to sleep at a park.  We will extend the lesson by reading about other habitats and the animals that live there.

Social Studies:  The students will be creating their own communities.  Last week they learned about what needs to be in a community.  Together in 2 groups they will build a community with homes, places to work/play/solve problems, and roads.  The final goal is to be able to explain how their community works and why buildings and homes were placed in certain places.

Religion: We have begun our lessons on how the church welcomes us and how we can be welcoming to others.  The focus is on the church and school community and we tied it into all of our other communities: family, sports, activities, etc.

Math: Our review went well last week, but we did spend an extra day on some trickier problems.  We will have a math quiz on Tuesday and Wednesday.  As the students become more familiar with testing procedures, I will let them work ahead if they are able to.  However, for this quiz we will work together to discuss strategies and how to explain our thinking.

Science: We will work on lesson 3: Why do frogs "ribbit"?  Last week in class we began the lesson by learning what sounds different types of frogs make.  This week we will learn about the habitats of these frogs and how to tell how many frogs live in each habitat.

Social Studies: The students worked together to create two wonderful communities.  The students began by working in partners to make a small community, then joined together to make a community of 4, and joined together again to make a community of 8.  The students discussed the differences between the communities, how joining together allowed them to have more of what they needed, and discussed what was still wishing from their community.  They discovered that by combining the two communities, they had more of what they needed and wanted.
These communities are on display outside of our classroom for you to see at Curriculum Night. :)

Religion: The students completed a chapter review and brought it home to study.  We will take the quiz on Tuesday.  As with math, this quiz will be done together as they learn the format and testing expectations.  Later in the week we will begin Chapter 2: Baptism.
