Religion Curriculum
Curriculum
At St. Francis de Sales School, our religion program follows the Archdiocese of Chicago curriculum and helps students grow in their understanding of the Bible, liturgical practices, church history, and the sacraments. Most importantly, we strive to make living our faith part of everything we do—not just religion class.
Morning Prayer
Each day begins with a school-wide morning prayer led by the administration. During Advent and Lent, we share special prayers, and in Spanish class students learn the “Padre Nuestro.” In October and May, we place a special focus on praying the Rosary together.
Weekly All-School Mass
Every Friday, as well as on Holy Days of Obligation, our students and teachers come together to celebrate Mass at 8:30 a.m. Each homeroom class (K–8) takes part in planning two Masses during the school year. Students have the opportunity to serve in many ways—by reading Scripture, bringing up the gifts, offering petitions, singing, playing music, serving at the altar, and welcoming others. Families are always welcome and encouraged to join us for these celebrations, as well as for parish Masses on Sundays and Holy Days.
Sacramental Preparation
Sacramental preparation is a partnership between the Pastor, parish staff, teachers, Catechists, and families. Together, we help children prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in elementary school, and Confirmation in high school. Each program begins with a parent meeting so families feel supported and informed. Second grade is a special year, as students prepare for both Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist.
First Reconciliation
Students receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Advent and Lent. Second graders celebrate their First Reconciliation in February.
First Holy Communion
Our second graders receive their First Holy Communion at the weekly all-school Mass in May—a joyful and memorable day for students, families, and our parish community.
