8A Meets every Wednesday and Thursday during 4th Period.
Due to the transition to Distance Learning for the remainder of the school year, please note the following: Due Dates for projects are suggestions to help students keep on track. They are not being enforced, so as long as the work is completed as required and submitted before the end of the quarter, students will receive full credit for their work.
In addition, grading for this class will be assigned on a PASS/FAIL basis. To pass, students must complete at least 2/3rds of the assigned work. My hope is that students would want to complete all the assignments, but we realise that the inherent difficulties of Distance Learning can be a challenge in and of themselves.
If you have questions or concerns about these policies, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you!
______________________________________________________________________________________Should you or your student require help with a project, or you have a question that is too involved for email, I would be happy to schedule an "Office Hours" Google Meeting. Please send me an email to notify me of your interest along with a brief summary of the topic/need (so I can be prepared) and a list of three available times (in order of preference). If I am unable to meet during one of the times you have indicated, I will reply with alternatives.

Assignment
As we will not be returning to school this quarter, I have had to implement some changes on our binder project. First, and foremost, you will not be submitting the components of your project digitally. Ideally, I would like everything compiled into a Powerpoint Presentation except for the World of the Work Writing Exercise. Your Presentation should be set up in the following order and include all these elements:
- Slide 1/Title Slide:Artist's Name/Artwork; Your Name; Research Project
- Slide 2: Photograph of Artwork and Complete Attribution (Artist's Name, Title (Year), Medium, Dimensions, Current Location) The photograph of the artwork should fill most of the frame
- Slide 3: Four additional Artworks (fully attributed) - I would prefer to have these animated so the image can take up as much of the frame as possible; if you are unable to animate the presentation, then insert additional slides for the additional artworks
- Slide 4: Timeline of the Artist’s life that includes: major events from the artist’s life, an image of the artist, four images of their artwork and major events in world history.
- Slide 5: 30 Questions about the artwork (revised, if necessary)
- Slide 6: Image of your detail study, labelled
- Slide 7: 10 adjectives that describe your artwork
- Slide 8: Poem (with revisions)
- Slide 9: Image of your final appropriation
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
If you received approval on your appropriation artwork based on the sketch summited last week, you may begin work on your final appropriation artwork. This will be submitted with your binder on May 15th. I will be scheduling Progress Check Google Meetings for the week of May 4th. Some of these will occur during our normally scheduled class time, the remainder will be scheduled for 2 PM. You will need to sign up for at least one session and you should have some work completed on your project so we have something to discuss. I will send more information when and if this meeting is scheduled.
As for your Appropriation artwork, select a medium that you can work on comfortably at home – this can be a painting, drawing, print, found art sculpture, carving, embroidery project, digital art, etc. Work with the materials you have available at home and with materials you are comfortable working in.This needs to be an ORIGINAL work of art inspired by the artwork at the center of your research – it is NOT A COPY of this artwork. It needs to be changed and filtered through your perspective. There are examples and explanations of some ways to approach this on the PPT posted on Google Classroom. If you attended last week’s meeting, you hopefully have a good idea how to proceed. If you still have questions, please email me this week. This needs to be your BEST WORK. You need to start this project now. Do not wait until May 13th to start or you will not be happy with the grade you receive.
Due:
Assignment
Appropriation Powerpoint and Worksheet
In Art, an appropriation is when we use someone’s artwork as the basis for an original creation. IT IS NOT COPYING THE ARTWORK. Instead, it is being inspired by the artwork to create something original. You can reference the themes of the artwork, borrow the composition (the way the figures or subject matter are placed in the artwork), or imitate the style of the artist. When we return to school, you will be creating an appropriated artwork based on the artwork at the core of your research project. To prepare for that, view the Appropriation Power-point posted on Google Classroom and complete the worksheet. As part of this assignment you will sketch a plan for what you would like to create. For the finished artwork, you will be able to use any of the supplies I have available in the classroom (acrylic paint, canvas, paper, colored pencils, collage, paper mache) or you may work in another media that you supply. The worksheet and sketch are due April 17th and can be emailed or posted on Google Classroom. If we return to school prior to this date, please bring the work with you.

Assignment
Please observe the following rules while attending the meeting:
1) Keep your camera on.
2) Mute your microphone until asked to un-mute.
3) Post questions to comments. I will answer them in the order they are posted. When discussing your question, please unmute so we can converse.
4) Keep conversations and comments on topic. Say hi, wave, etc. at the beginning of the meeting but avoid distracting chatter during the meeting. It makes it very difficult to respond to questions if there is a constant dialogue unfolding in comments that have nothing to do with the meeting content.
5) If you have already have specific questions, please email me in advance so I can be prepared to answer them within the presentation.
Thank you! Hope to see you on Wednesday.
Due:
Participate in the Spirit Week festivities next week by dressing in the appropriate theme (see below). Submit a photograph of yourself (dressed accordingly) to the school Facebook page and email me a copy. 5 points for every day you participate, total of 25 possible points. Photograph must be posted and email must be sent on the appropriate day to receive credit.
Due:
Assignment
World of the Work – Creative Writing Exercise
Use the artwork at the core of your art-based research as the starting point for a creative writing exercise. Imagine you have stepped through the canvas into the world of this painting. What do you hear? What do you smell? What conversations are happening? What do you see when you look past the edges of the canvas? What happens next? You can imagine you are having a conversation with a character in the artwork or are taking a journey through (and beyond) the image. Be creative, but make sure your work is a direct response to the artwork. To help you get started, I have posted a worksheet on Google Classroom. Respond to the questions, and then use your answers as a starting point for the creative writing assignment.
This draft must be:
- 2 pages minimum
- Double-spaced
- Formatted according to St. Francis de Sales written standards
- Checked for spelling and grammar
Submit your first draft and the worksheet by Thursday, April 9th. Your draft will be graded and returned. Your final version will be submitted with the binder on May 15th.
Due:
Assignment
Any other outstanding/late work can also be submitted to me digitally and must be received by the end of the day on March 20th if you want it applied to the quarter grade.
