Hello 7th Grade, now that we've had a bit of a review and practice with commas, we're going to dig deep and look at each comma rule individually and practice them in more detail. There are two resources we will be using. The first is a presentation of 8 COMMA RULES that I have divided into 4 videos. The second is a PDF file of some worksheet pages for practice with each rule.
Today, please do the following:
1. View and take notes on Video #1:

-Comma Rule 2: With Coordinate Adjectives
Take notes on the rules and the exceptions. It is as important to know when not to use a comma as it is to know when to use a comma. Please submit a photo of your Video #1 Notes here.
2. Practice these 2 rules by completing page 280 in the attached file. You can either print the page and complete it or write your answers in your notebook. Please submit a photo of your completed work here.

Hello folks,
FIRST: Take 10 uninterrupted minutes to write on a topic of your choice. Use the response space below to complete your free write. No need to worry too much about punctuation or "correctness." Just get your ideas out, and DON'T STOP until the 10 minutes is up. Put a timer on for yourself (all your phones have one in your clock settings) and get writing. If you can't think of a topic to explore, try one of these:
1. Should/will e-learning continue in the fall?
2. All the things I'm missing because of the crummy caronavirus.
3. First thing I'm gonna do once it's okay to leave my house.
4. Write a diary entry from the point of view of your dog or cat, who may be wondering why you're spending so much time at home.
5. Summer's coming. What should I put on my to-do list?
6. What's on my playlist right now and why?
7. When it comes to food, which of the following categories do I fall in:
a. I'm a foodie. I love fine dining and trying new and maybe exotic things to eat.
b. I'm a pretty picky eater. There are only a limited number of things I like, and don't try to make me eat that. No thank you.
c. If you put it in front of me, I don't care what it is, you'd better watch your fingers.
d. Junk food is my go-to. I live for burgers, chicken nuggets, fries, and pizza.
THEN: Check out what your classmates have written, too. Leave a comment for at least 2 of your classmates about their free write.

Hello 7th Grade!!! The week is almost over and the weekend is on its way!!!
Today...
Your narrative first draft should be completed and turn in by now. You should have kept a copy for yourself. With this copy you will complete a Self Edit.
Attached below is a Self-Edit Checklist you will use to locate places where revisions may be necessary and make those revisions. Remember that this is the step in the writing process where we make our draft peer-ready, that means in a conditions that is ready to share with a peer, who will review it for you. The cleaning crew is coming, and now's the time to get the house ready for a deep clean. So pick up your socks and put your laundry away. In other words, clean up your draft and get it ready for a cleaning.
It may be helpful to print a copy of the Checklist if you can and check off the list as you check things.
The suggested strategy is to be methodical in your approach here. You are expected to read your story many times and look for a different thing or set of things each time you look. Don't stop and get side-tracked. For example, if you are reading it to look for evidence of action details, don't get side-tracked by a grammar error and forget about the action details.
Another important strategy is to save proofreading for grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and FWW for last. When you get these final steps, remember to use the proofreading techniques we've used in class
1. Use a zoom view to enlarge print
2. Read choppy one word at a time
3. Ask a family member to proof for small errors (an extra set of eyes is always welcome).
When you are finished and feel confident that your narrative is in "shareable," condition, make a copy for yourself to share with your peer editor on Monday and turn a copy in here.
The self-edited draft is due on Monday, April 20 by 8:00 a.m.

Good morning 7th Grade. Having had a bit of time to think about your TREASURE ISLAND project, I am deciding to go a bit of a different route. The virtual treasure chest i think would be too complicated. This project is something you can work on in both reading and l.a., but you will need to work alone. I promise in the future, I will give you some buddy projects to work on too. Details of this project are attached. So to reiterate, this is a combined reading and l.a. project. Keep in mind that the end result will require you to share your finished product in a very fun and creative way with your classmates.
Attached are two things. First, a description of the project in 3 steps. Second a presentation that contains information about format, structure, and content. You will need this for step 1 of your project. Your assignment for today is read the entire Google Slides presentation and take notes on only these slides: 2, 3, 7, 14, 17, and 18. Send me a picture of
your notes here. Notes are Due Friday, April 3 (tomorrow) at 8:00 a.m.. Turn in here.
Tomorrow (Friday) I would like for us to meet on on Google Meet at 9:30 for about 30 minutes to review your notes and discuss the project. At that time I can answer any questions you might have. I will also share with you the project due dates when we meet tomorrow too.

Hello class, per our conversation yesterday about foils and theme, I would like you to write a paragraph that addresses the question/prompt below. Please write your paragraph in the answer/reply below and follow a thesis paragraph structure:
1. Topic sentence with author, title, topic.
2. Claim: Direct answer to the prompt (for this question it's a theme statement related Jim and the foil characters).
3. Evidence: an example or two from the story that supports your claim. You can paraphrase this in your own words and don't need to cite the page number. (for this question, what examples from the story show Jim making choices based on the models of Smollett or Silver).
4. An explanation of your evidence. Show HOW the evidence you chose supports your claim.
5. A concluding sentence that summarizes your position or emphasizes the importance of it.
PROMPT/QUESTION:
What theme statement might Stevenson have wanted young readers (like you) to learn by showing Jim modeling himself after one of the foil characters (Smollett or Silver).

Write a diary entry about your time in isolation. Imagine that years later, your diary entry is found by people who are too young to remember this moment in history. Or imagine that years from now you will use your diary entry to tell your kids and/or grandkids about the pandemic of 2020 and how you experienced it. Include how your life has changed and how you are coping with it. Include your feelings and concerns and any other details that you think would be pertinent. Consider this diary entry to be a primary source that could be analyzed by future generations to better understand this historical event.
When you are finished, read the diary entry of classmate who's last name comes after yours in the alphabet (Meghan, go to Mario's diary entry) and make a respectful comment about it.
DUE WEDNESDAY (tomorrow), APRIL 1 at 8:00 a.m.

Hello students,
GOOGLE MEET--Looking forward to saying "good morning" to you in person via Google Meet at 10:15 a.m. HERE IS THE LINK: https://meet.google.com/pve-zqxn-zaj.
In the mean time, we are getting ready to take a test on Treasure Island (after Spring Break).
ACTIVITY 1--Watch the mini biography of author Robert Louis Stevenson attached below and take notes on it. I will check them at a later date.
ACTIVITY 2--One great way to do that is to create a study aid for yourself. When you return from break, I will give you a study guide that will help, but it's important that you keep the book details straight. A good way to do this is to make a list of events for each part. Since we're in this together, let's share what we have. Below, I have assigned each one of you a part from the book. Two people will be assigned to a part. Work separately to come up with your own list. Your job is to write a list of 10 important events that happen in that part in the order in which they happen. Use the reply below to make your list of 10 events. Remember:
1. Work separately.
2. Title your answer with the part #.
3. Write a list of 10 important events that happened in the part in the order in which they happened.
PART 1--Mario, Thomas
PART 2--Philippe, Nathan
PART 3--Lilly, Elizabeth
PART 4--Philip, Evan
PART 5--Charlie, Meghan
PART 6--Anabella

Hello 7th Grade. Hope all is well with you and that you and your families continue to stay healthy. Today we are going to shift gears a bit and review the topic of THEME in a story. Today's work is in preparation for looking at TREASURE ISLAND in terms of theme. Today's assignment:
Watch the attached 2 videos about the topic of theme and how to write about it. Then take notes in your notebook about both videos. Hopefully, you'll find them enjoyable, too. When you are done taking notes, in the answer space below, list the four steps to writing a theme statement.

Hello folks. You've been doing so much writing in both reading and l.a. classes that we should take a little break. I'd like to do some activities that can help reinforce expository analytical skills without requiring you to do any major writing. This will give me a chance to catch up on reading and grading your essays. Hope you all brought home your l.a. textbooks and notebooks. We'll be working in Chapter 7 for the next few days.
TODAY'S ASSIGNMENTS: Create a Google Doc with a proper SFS heading and clearly label each activity before you begin them (Use the notebook heading format).
1. Read the expository examples on pp. 450-451. Then read p. 452 "What Makes Good Expository Writing?" All of this should be great review information. Note: the term the book uses for "main idea statement" is "topic sentence." Complete Activity A on p. 453 by answering "yes" or "no" for each item.
2. Read pp. 454-455 "Main Idea and Detail." Also, great review information. Complete Activity D on p . 455 (write a topic sentence for each set of details).
When you are finished with both activities, submit your Google Docs here.
Hope you and your families are continuing to stay healthy!!!
