LA051420--Parent Letter Planning and Organizing in Google Classroom

LA051420--Parent Letter Planning and Organizing

Good morning, now that you have completed your brainstorming, is is time to work on organizing all those ideas.

First, you should look at your brainstorm list and eliminate some ideas that aren't so great (that happens with brainstorming).

Second, look at the list again, but this time try to see some patterns and commonalities. Remember that any good writing (even a letter) needs to be organized into paragraphs, and those paragraphs should have topics and details that support the topics, etc. So before you draft, it's important to give yourself a plan. Get in the habit with your writing to look at your brainstorming and find a way to group like ideas together.

Finally,
Two things I have provided to help in the Graduation Letter Instructions document are:
1. Suggested Organizational Structure page
2. A Graduation Letter Outline chart
Use them to create an outline for your letter so that you have an idea of where you're going to put your thoughts when you draft.
Read the Suggested Organizational Structure. If that makes sense to you, use it. If it doesn't, create your own structure as long as:
--it is organized
--you have grouped like ideas together into multiple paragraphs
--you have logically ordered your ideas within and between paragraphs

Either way, complete the Graduation Letter Outline with as much detail as you can. Do not write in complete sentences, but use key words and phrases. Arrange your ideas within and between paragraphs in a logical order. Make a copy to keep for yourself, and turn in a copy here. This assignment is due on Monday, May 18 by 8:00 a.m.

LOOKING AHEAD:
Friday: E-learning Planning Day, no new assignments

LA051320--Parent Letter Prewriting: Brainstorming and Organizing in Google Classroom

LA051320--Parent Letter Prewriting: Brainstorming and Organizing

Hello there. Today, we begin working on a letter to your moms/dads/guardians (whoever is responsible for you, provides for you, and takes care of you).

First, read the instructions in the attached document very carefully. Don't skip anything. It is meant to provide for you an overview of this assignment, but also to give you an idea of what the exact expectations are and why this assignment may be important for you at this time in your life.

Second, complete the BRAINSTORM IDEAS page. Remember that brainstorming is getting ideas down. Don't worry if they are good, bad or otherwise (that comes later). Just get your ideas flowing by writing as much as you can to answer the brainstorm questions provided (kind of like a free write). You don't have to write in complete sentences. Lists are good for this, key words/ideas. Just get it down, and keep it flowing--as much as you can. When you are finished, make a copy to turn in and keep a copy for yourself. Turn in the BRAINSTORMING IDEAS page here. This assignment is due by Thursday, May 14 (tomorrow) by 8:00 a.m.

LAFR0501--FREE WRITE

Hello folks,
FIRST: Take 10 uninterrupted minutes to write on a topic of your choice. Use the response space below to complete your free write. No need to worry too much about punctuation or "correctness." Just get your ideas out, and DON'T STOP until the 10 minutes is up. Put a timer on for yourself (all your phones have one in your clock settings) and get writing. If you can't think of a topic to explore, try one of these:
1. Should/will e-learning continue in the fall?
2. All the things I'm missing because of the crummy caronavirus.
3. First thing I'm gonna do once it's okay to leave my house.
4. Write a diary entry from the point of view of your dog or cat, who may be wondering why you're spending so much time at home.
5. Summer's coming. What should I put on my to-do list?
6. What's on my playlist right now and why?
7. When it comes to food, which of the following categories do I fall in:
a. I'm a foodie. I love fine dining and trying new and maybe exotic things to eat.
b. I'm a pretty picky eater. There are only a limited number of things I like, and don't try to make me eat that. No thank you.
c. If you put it in front of me, I don't care what it is, you'd better watch your fingers.
d. Junk food is my go-to. I live for burgers, chicken nuggets, fries, and pizza.

THEN: Check out what your classmates have written, too. Leave a comment for at least 2 of your classmates about their free write.

MONDAY, APRIL 20, 2020--8TH GRADE READING ASSIGNMENT in Google Classroom

MONDAY, APRIL 20, 2020--8TH GRADE READING ASSIGNMENT

Good morning. Okay, THE BOOK THIEF is officially behind us, and since we will be e-learning until the end of the school year :( ...

...let's do another novel. Each of you should have brought home a copy of LORD OF THE FLIES (I gave it to you the day before we left school). It's a great story, and short enough to get through before the end of May. There are 12 chapters in total, so we will do three chapters at a time. Here's a preview of how we will tackle this book:
--VOCABULARY--We need to do it. Lot's of challenging words in this book (but don't worry; it's not that hard). Attached please find a copy of the vocabulary for the first three chapters. There are 23 vocabulary words for these chapters. You will be expected to do vocab the same way you've always done since the beginning of the year with me (on loose leaf, formatted the way you always do).
--BREAKFAST BOOK TALKS--You'll have to provide your own breakfast, but I am hoping we can video-conference and have student-led discussions (like we did with THE BOOK THIEF) about the chapters we've read and debate some issues and themes that the story brings up. You can also let us know what you're eating. I wonder who eats the best breakfast???
--QUIZZES AND THESIS PARAGRAPHS--You guys are all over these. Nuff said.
--ART ACTIVITIES
--CREATIVE WRITING
--A SHORT END OF BOOK ASSESSMENT

CHAPTERS 1-3 VOCABULARY is due by Thursday, April 23, by 8:00 a.m. Please take photos of the loose leaf pages and post them in the turn-in here.

LOOKING AHEAD:
Tuesday: We'll learn about the author, William Golding.
Wednesday: We will do an introductory (pre-reading) activity
Thursday and Friday: We'll start reading.

ON A SEPARATE NOTE: I am so disappointed we will not be meeting again before the end of the school year. I miss you all so much. I am especially sorry for you, 8th graders, and all the postponed special activities that you should be able to experience but cannot. I hope there is a way to make it up to you when all this is over. Please let me know if you have ideas for how we can make the best of these times.

TUESDAY, APRIL 14, 2020--8TH GRADE L.A. ASSIGNMENT in Google Classroom

TUESDAY, APRIL 14, 2020--8TH GRADE L.A. ASSIGNMENT

Hello again, I have checked your drafts to see that they are completed. You may unsubmit them for this next step.

Today...Self-editing!
COMPANY'S COMING!!! So we need clean-up for the housekeeper and get ready for peer-evaluation (tomorrow). Attached is a 3-page, 7-step SELF EVALUATION form. Remember, your goal is to make your essay as perfect as possible before a fresh set of eyes looks at it and evaluates it. Use the SELF-EVALUATION form as a checklist and make any revisions necessary before it goes through peer review.

DO NOT REMOVE THE FONT COLORS THAT IDENTIFY THE BP STEPS.

The suggested strategy is to be methodical in your approach here. You are expected to read your essay many times and look for a different thing or set of things each time you look. Don't stop and get side-tracked. For example, if you are reading it to look for evidence of facts and explanations, don't get side-tracked by a grammar error and forget about the facts and explanations.

Another important strategy is to save proofreading (Steps 6 and 7) for grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and FWW for last. When you get these final steps, remember to use the proofreading techniques we've used in class. Use a zoom view to enlarge print, read choppy one word at a time, ask a family member to proof for small errors (an extra set of eyes is always welcome).

When you are finished and feel confident that your essay is in "shareable," condition, make a copy for yourself to share with your peer editor tomorrow and turn a copy in here. The self-edited draft is DUE tomorrow, Wednesday, April 15, by 8:00 a.m.

FRIDAY, APRIL 3, 2020--8TH GRADE READING AND L.A. ASSIGNMENT in Google Classroom

FRIDAY, APRIL 3, 2020--8TH GRADE READING AND L.A. ASSIGNMENT

Hello 8th Grade! Here's what's on our agenda for today:

READING--Continue making progress on your ISOLATION project. Here are answers to student questions from the most recent Project Check-in Form:

Q: How many diary entries are we required to do?
A: Directions say 5 days.

Q: Is there a minimum or maximum length a diary entry should be?
A: Each entry should be close to a page long (handwritten or double spaced)

Q: Can I switch the Column B project?
A: Yes, there is still time to do that.

Q: Are we allowed to get a bit creative with some of our writing? For example, describing the scenery after the air strikes in different ways that the Book Thief doesn't like the the feelings of eeriness the ghost town-like streets as smoke fills the air.
A: Absolutely yes for Column A choices. I am expecting creativity with all of the Column A choices. I am expecting descriptive writing and use of creative writing tools. For Column B writing, there is a certain amount of description that you can and should provide, but knowing what the purpose for your writing is (persuasive, expository, creative) can help you decide how much creativity you can include. Column B choices are predominantly something other than creative writing; however, writing vivid descriptions can be useful if you are reporting about a particular experience, which absolutely can be the main focus of many Column B choices. In this case using vivid descriptions (precise nouns, exact verbs, some figurative language, etc., would be very appropriate.

L.A.--
1. Body Paragraph 1 should be complete and revised! If not and you have questions or feel confusion/frustration, please reach out to me for help.
2. Continue working on drafting Body Paragraph 2. Continue working in the same document as BP1. Make sure you are following the format/directions on the BP presentation and as we have reviewed. BP2 should be formatted/structured just like BP1, and color your steps accordingly. DUE DATE for BP2 is Monday, April 6 at 8:00 a.m. Please submit here.

Hello folks! Welcome back from Spring Break. Please review this presentation about how to draft a body paragraph and then begin working on your own body paragraph 1 for your persuasive essay. Start a GoogleDoc with a proper SFS heading. Copy and past your thesis statement and then copy and paste the text of your blue note cards. Use these as your evidence and begin drafting the first body paragraph.
Your assignment for today is to REVIEW THE ATTACHED PRESENTATION before tomorrow's Google Meet. For Wednesday, draft your first body paragraph for your persuasive essay.
I would like to schedule some time for us to meet on Google Meet and ask questions tomorrow around 8:30, so please plan on connecting then.
You can turn the paragraph in here. It is due Wednesday, April 1, by 8:00 a.m.

MONDAY, MARCH 30, 2020--8TH GRADE READING ASSIGNMENT

Attached is a Google Slides presentation about an end-of-book project that I would like you to read and review. This project will be worth an exam grade and will serve as your final test for THE BOOK THIEF. You will be asked to pick two activities. In the reply below, please make a list of 3 possible activities that interest you and that you are considering. You do not need to commit today to which activities you will do. Tomorrow, let's spend some time together in Google Meet. At that time, I can answer any questions you have. So:
1. Reply below with at least three activities you are interested in.
2. Meet me tomorrow on Google Meet at 8:30 a.m. to discuss further. Save questions for then or email me.

THURSDAY, MARCH 19--8TH GRADE L.A. ASSIGNMENT, E-Learning Day 4 in Google Classroom

THURSDAY, MARCH 19--8TH GRADE L.A. ASSIGNMENT, E-Learning Day 4

Hello! LOTS OF DIRECTIONS READING TODAY. Today is the day we put the finishing touches on our digital note cards. By now your your file should have all the notes you need to write your essay. However, as I have been checking, I see that many of you need to work on formatting, proofreading and citing.
Remember that you need to cite between 2 and 3 sources. The more sources you can cite, the more credible your argument will be. Therefore, check your information and make sure it isn't just coming from a single source.
Once you have revised your cards, you will submit a final draft of the cards here. The final digital note cards are worth a quiz grade, so do a good job, please. Here is a list of things to do to get your cards ready:
1. FILE CONTENT--Your cards should consist of the following in this exact order:
*TITLE SLIDE with your name on it
*2-3 LIGHT BLUE cards that support the first reason
*2-3 LIGHT GREEN cards that support the second reason
*1 YELLOW CARD that helps to explain or demonstrate the counter-argument
*1 YELLOW CARD that helps to explain or support the rebuttal
*1 WHITE chart that lists your sources
3. ORDERING YOUR CARDS--Per the list above, make sure that each of your cards is in the right order. Also, give some thought to the blue and green "reason" cards. Order these in the way you will present them in your paper. You have to think about order BETWEEN the reasons and WITHIN the reasons.
*BETWEEN THE REASONS (Between Blue and Green cards)--First, consider whether the reasons you are presenting need to logically be ordered a certain way. Sometimes one reason logically leads to another so presenting them that way makes most sense to the reader. If this is not the case for you and one reason doesn't really depend on the other, then you can choose to put your strongest reason last (save the best for last). That's a very effective argument strategy. In any case, you should expect to move cards around and possibly even change background colors to reflect any new order decisions you have made. YOU MUST ALSO BE PREPARED TO RE-ORDER THE REASONS IN YOUR THESIS STATEMENT, IF NECESSARY. THE ORDER OF THE REASONS IN YOUR TS MUST MATCH THE ORDER OF THE REASONS IN YOUR BPs.
*WITHIN THE REASONS (Within Blue Cards and Within Green Cards)--Now let's discuss the facts and statistics that you found to support a single reason (either the blue cards or the green cards). Just like deciding which reason you will present first, you must also decide what order you will present the supporting information in for each single reason. Use the same deciding factors as above. If one support logically follows from another (maybe one causes the other), then order your cards in that way. If this is not the case, then save your most impressive or strongest supports for last within that paragraph. Just like above, be prepared to shuffle around the cards within a color.
3. CARD FORMAT--As we reviewed a few weeks ago, the format of the cards is important. See my samples if you're having trouble understanding what they should look like. I have attached a blank DIGITAL NOTE CARDS presentation here if you've already deleted my sample cards.
*UPPER LEFT CORNER--In the upper left corner, make sure to state the general topic of the color (the reason) in a short key phrase (Example: Causes Pollution, or Negatively Impacts the Economy ). Notice that I have capitalized the topics; you do the same! For the blue and green cards, all cards of the same color must have the same topic name (the reason). For the yellow cards, one card will be called the Counter-argument, and the other card will be called the Rebuttal.
*UPPER RIGHT CORNER--write the method in which you are borrowing the information: paraphrase, summary, or direct quote. Most cards should be paraphrase or summary cards. Only one should be a direct quote. If you don't have a direct quote card yet, don't worry. We'll talk about those tomorrow.
*BODY OF THE NOTE--THE STUFF YOU BORROWED:
--Between 1-3 complete sentences on only one aspect of your argument.
--Grammatically correct with no spelling, capitalization, or punctuation errors.
--Expressed clearly and effectively, and paraphrased sufficiently to avoid plagiarism
--Ends with an in-text citation. Citation should include the author's last name and a page number. If the author is unknowns, then use a unique key word instead. Examples (McCormick 2) or (Financials 1). Notice that the name or key word is always capitalized. Notice also that there is no punctuation between the name and the number. Notice there is no word, abbreviation, or symbol for 'page.' It's just a capitalized word and a numeral inside parentheses. Finally, make sure that the end mark goes after the citation so that the citation is inside the last sentence of the note.
4. SOURCE CARD--Should be as complete as possible and should contain only those sources that you have borrowed from. That means you should remove any sources that you did not make a note card for, and you should add any sources that you found later and used. Check spelling and follow rules of capitalization. You may add a second SOURCE CARD page if your sources don't fit on one page.
5. NOT NEEDED--When you are finished, please delete all of my explanation and sample cards. We don't need those anymore.

When you have completed all of the above, congratulations! You are ready to turn in your digital note cards here.
DUE MARCH 20 (tomorrow) by 7:00 AM.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18--8TH GRADE L.A. ASSIGNMENT--E-Learning, Day 3 in Google Classroom

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18--8TH GRADE L.A. ASSIGNMENT--E-Learning, Day 3

PART 1--If you haven't done so already, look at my private comments on your digital note cards. Make modifications if necessary. Contact me if you need help or clarification.

PART 2--Continuing from yesterday. Now you should have an idea about what your counter-argument will address. If anyone has any questions about this or is finding it challenging to choose a counter-argument, please contact me for help. BP3 will consist of acknowledging a counter-argument and answering with a rebuttal, if you can.

STEP 3--Write a statement (one or two sentences) that summarizes this counter argument. For example, you might begin by saying: "Conversely some may say..." or "On the other hand, some people may argue..." and then summarize the counter argument in one or two sentences. Be specific and complete about what the counterargument is, but do not go into a lot of detail yet. You're just introducing it. If you're not sure how to word it, refer to yesterday's video. Submit your counter-argument statement in a comment below. Label it: COUNTER-ARGUMENT STATEMENT.

STEP 4--Find in your sources some details to help explain the counter-argument. Add to Digital Note Cards (1 Yellow Card). Left corner should say Counter-Argument.

STEP 5--Look in your sources some facts or details that might refute the counter-argument. Add to Digital Note Cards (1 Yellow Card). Left corner should say Rebuttal. IF YOU CANNOT FIND ANY REBUTTAL facts, be prepared to acknowledge it but find a way to show that your argument is still stronger despite the counter-argument.

ALL DIGITAL NOTE CARDS MUST BE COMPLETE BY TOMORROW. Add yellow cards, but DO NOT SUBMIT THE CARDS YET.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, you will be cleaning up your note cards by deleting the instruction, sample cards, making sure each card is formatted correctly and is the right color, etc.

TUESDAY, MARCH 17--8TH GRADE L.A. ASSIGNMENT, E-Learning Day 2 in Google Classroom

TUESDAY, MARCH 17--8TH GRADE L.A. ASSIGNMENT, E-Learning Day 2

Good morning, folks. I have reviewed all of your THESIS STATEMENTS and provided private comments for you to look at. Go to yesterday's digital note card turn in and see my private comments. Most of you will not need to alter your thesis statements, but a few have a bit of revising to do. No big deal. All in all, they are in pretty good shape. So here are your assignments for today:
1. Revise thesis statement if necessary and reply with the revised version in a comment to me here. Label it: REVISED THESIS STATEMENT. If I accepted your thesis statement as is, you do not need to do this step.
2. Begin work on the counter-argument:
STEP 1--Watch the attached video on creating a counter-argument and take notes in your notebook. Send me a pic of your notes. Include definition of counter argument, rebuttal, concession and list of transitions to use. Also tell why counterargument is important and effective in an argument.
STEP 2--Choose one reason to include in your argumentative essay that goes against your claim. In all your research, hopefully, you've come across some argument or reason that counters your claim.

LOOKING AHEAD--Expect to work on these things tomorrow:
STEP 3--Write a statement (one or two sentences) that summarizes this counter argument. For example, you might begin by saying: "Conversely some may say..." or "On the other hand, some people may argue..." and then summarize the counter argument in one or two sentences. Submit your counter-argument statement in a comment below. Label it: COUNTER-ARGUMENT STATEMENT.
You will need to address the counter argument in some way, preferrably with a rebuttal or answer of some type. Step 3 will be creating two digital note cards for BP3. One that supports the counter argument and one that supports a rebuttal or your answer to the counter-argument. More on this tomorrow.
